Trek to Castle Rock

12 Sep -- This past Sunday a group of 4 trekked out towards Castle Rock which is about 3-miles out of town. It's out towards Mt. Erebus, the active volcanoe on Ross Island. This trek takes us out across the Ross Glacier. When we left the winds were around 25mph with gusts up to 40mph. The windchill was around -40-50F. The majority of the trek out there is up hill. Fortunately, along the way they have "Apples" or little dome type structures which allow a break from the wind. You will see the flagged route in some of the pics above. The flags indicate a known/solid route. Venturing too far off the flagged route could put you in danger of crevasse fields. The trek was glorious, truly it shows why I came here.
