The Ice Breakers are Here

The Oden, a Swedish Icebreaker and the Polar Sea, a US Coastguard Ship are here breaking up the McMurdo Sound to creat a channel for our tankers. The fuel barge is due in Feb 4th and the Resupply Vessel just a few days later. The boats made it to mcMurdo about a week or so ago. They continue to make runs up and down the Sound from our base out to the open water and back. Everyone is hopeful that while the entire Sea Ice might not blow out perhaps at least the channel ice will blow out. This is a big deal because then we have more likelihood of animal life coming nearer station. As you can see in the one photo the warmer temps and broken ice have helped bring in a bunch of Adelies. Open water means possible whales, Killer Whales at that. I've never seen those in the wild so that would be a real treat for me to see.

If you can't lure an Killer Whale within sight you might have to catch Shamu :-) I hope the channel clears enough for you to get some good pics.
