Amber on Ice

This is a pic of Williams Airfield a.k.a. Willie Field Town. It's located out on the McMurdo Ice Shelf approximately 7-miles from town. Willie Field like our Ice Runway is a completely portable airfield. Everything you see is dragged from Ice Runway to Willie Field each season and then back again for the start of the next season. They hook all of these buildings up to large tracked heavy equipment and simply drag them on skis across the ice. It's ridiculous. When they moved Ice Runway over to Willie Field back in early December, when the temps went up and the sea ice began to soften, it took them about 36-hours to complete the move. It was amazing to watch! One day you walk out and look to the sea ice and there's a runway, the next day you go out and it's vanished.
